Tour Itinerary
Day 1 – Arrival in North Iceland
Your journey begins in North Iceland, where broad fjords, volcanic landscapes, and quieter roads offer a different perspective on the country.
Arrive in Akureyri, North Iceland's largest town, or make your way north from Reykjavík. Set on the shores of Eyjafjörður, Akureyri combines a vibrant local atmosphere with easy access to the region's natural wonders. Depending on your arrival time, explore the town's charming centre, stroll along the waterfront, or simply settle in and enjoy the slower pace of northern Iceland. Surrounded by mountains and one of the country's longest fjords, Akureyri provides an ideal introduction to a region known for its dramatic scenery and strong connection to nature.
Optional Activities
- Forest Lagoon
- Whale Watching from Akureyri
- Beer Spa
Day 2 – Into the Volcanic Landscapes of Mývatn
Today the landscape begins to transform as fertile valleys give way to lava fields, volcanic craters, and geothermal activity.
Travel east towards the Lake Mývatn region, one of Iceland's most fascinating geological areas. Along the way, stop at Goðafoss, the "Waterfall of the Gods," before continuing through increasingly volcanic terrain. As you approach Mývatn, the landscape becomes defined by lava formations, pseudocraters, and expansive views across the lake. The area sits within an active volcanic zone and offers a remarkable glimpse into the natural forces that continue to shape Iceland today. Arrive at your accommodation with time to begin exploring the region or simply enjoy the peaceful surroundings.
Optional Activities
- Mývatn Earth Lagoon
- Horseback Riding
Day 3 – Geothermal Wonders & Lava Formations
Few places in Iceland showcase the power of nature as clearly as the landscapes surrounding Lake Mývatn.
Spend the day exploring the geological highlights of the region. Visit Námaskarð, where steam rises from colourful geothermal fields and sulphur vents create an otherworldly atmosphere. Explore Dimmuborgir, a striking lava field filled with unusual rock formations and local folklore, before continuing to Skútustaðagígar, where volcanic activity created a series of unique pseudocraters along the lake's shoreline. Throughout the day, the changing scenery reveals the incredible diversity of landscapes concentrated within this relatively small area. Combined with abundant birdlife and wide-open vistas, the region offers a rewarding blend of geology and natural beauty.
Day 4 – Waterfalls & Canyons of the Diamond Circle
Today follows the Diamond Circle, a route that showcases some of North Iceland's most dramatic and lesser-known natural wonders.
Travel northeast towards Dettifoss, Europe's most powerful waterfall, where immense volumes of glacial water thunder into a rugged canyon below. Continue through landscapes shaped by volcanic activity and powerful rivers before reaching Ásbyrgi Canyon, a horseshoe-shaped depression surrounded by towering cliffs and woodland. According to Icelandic folklore, the canyon was formed by the hoofprint of Odin's eight-legged horse, while geologists attribute its creation to catastrophic glacial floods. Together, Dettifoss and Ásbyrgi demonstrate the forces that have shaped North Iceland over thousands of years, creating some of the country's most impressive natural landmarks.
Day 5 – Húsavík & the North Coast
The rugged coastline of North Iceland takes centre stage today, where dramatic ocean views and rich marine life define the experience.
Travel towards Húsavík, a colourful harbour town widely regarded as Iceland's whale-watching capital. Set beside Skjálfandi Bay, the town enjoys a spectacular setting between mountains and sea, with abundant wildlife found in the surrounding waters. Spend time exploring the harbour, coastal viewpoints, and local museums before continuing along sections of the northern coastline. Compared to the volcanic landscapes around Mývatn, the atmosphere here feels distinctly maritime, with fishing communities, seabirds, and expansive ocean views shaping the character of the region.
Optional Activities
- Whale Watching
- Geosea Geothermal Baths
- Puffin Watching (Seasonal)
- Traditional Sailing Tour
Day 6 – Along the Tröllaskagi Coast to Siglufjörður
Today follows one of Iceland's most scenic coastal routes, where towering mountains meet the sea and small fishing communities sit tucked between narrow fjords.
Leaving Akureyri behind, travel north along the Tröllaskagi Peninsula, a region known for its dramatic mountain scenery, winding coastal roads, and rich maritime history. The route passes through picturesque villages and sheltered fjords, with opportunities to stop and enjoy sweeping views across the coastline. Continue to Siglufjörður, Iceland's northernmost town and once the center of the country's herring industry. Surrounded by steep mountains and a beautiful natural harbour, the town offers a unique glimpse into Iceland's fishing heritage. Stroll through the colourful streets, visit the harbour area, and enjoy the atmosphere of one of the country's most charming coastal communities before returning to Akureyri for the evening.
Optional Activities
- Herring Era Museum
- Beer Spa in Árskógssandur
- Sea Angling Tour
Day 7 – Departure
The final day offers a relaxed conclusion to your exploration of North Iceland.
Depart from Akureyri Airport or continue your travels elsewhere in Iceland. Depending on your onward plans, there may be time for a final walk through town, a stop along the fjord, or a leisurely breakfast before departure. From geothermal landscapes and volcanic terrain to waterfalls, canyons, and whale-rich coastlines, this journey highlights the extraordinary diversity that makes North Iceland one of the country's most rewarding regions.
Optional extension: Additional nights can be added in the Mývatn area or along the north coast to allow more time for exploration or activities.
