A full route around Iceland, where each region introduces a new landscape, from glacier-lined coasts to volcanic interiors and fjord landscapes. This itinerary follows the Ring Road, combining Iceland's well-known highlights with quieter areas along the way. It is suited for travelers who want to experience the country as a whole, with a steady pace that allows time to explore without rushing between regions. Each part of the route introduces a different landscape, from the South Coast's waterfalls and glaciers to the fjords of the east and the geothermal areas of the north.

The Route
Starting in Reykjavík, the route follows the Golden Circle and South Coast before continuing east along the base of Vatnajökull glacier. From there, it moves through the Eastfjords and into North Iceland, including the Lake Mývatn area. The return follows the northern and western regions before arriving back in Reykjavík.
The route forms a complete loop, with no backtracking and a clear progression through the country.
Driving distances are moderate for a route of this scale, with overnight stops positioned to maintain a comfortable pace.

Day 1 – Arrival in Reykjavík
Your journey begins in Iceland's vibrant capital, where colourful streets, coastal views, and a relaxed atmosphere provide an easy introduction to the adventure ahead.
After arriving at Keflavík Airport, collect your rental vehicle and drive across the Reykjanes Peninsula towards Reykjavík. The route offers a first glimpse of Iceland's volcanic character, with vast lava fields stretching towards the horizon and the Atlantic Ocean never far away. Depending on your arrival time, explore Reykjavík's compact city centre, stroll along the waterfront, or discover local cafés, shops, and museums. As Iceland's cultural and political heart, Reykjavík offers a comfortable starting point before setting out to explore the country's more remote regions.

Day 2 – The Wonders of the Golden Circle
Today the journey leaves the city behind and introduces the landscapes that have shaped Iceland's history, geology, and identity.
Travel inland to explore the famous Golden Circle. Begin at Þingvellir National Park, where Iceland's first parliament was founded and the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates slowly drift apart. Continue to the Geysir geothermal area, where bubbling hot springs and the regularly erupting Strokkur geyser demonstrate the power beneath the earth's surface. Nearby, Gullfoss waterfall thunders into a rugged canyon, creating one of Iceland's most iconic natural sights. As the day continues, head towards South Iceland, where broad farmlands, glacier-fed rivers, and distant mountain views begin to dominate the landscape.

Day 3 – Waterfalls & Black Sand Beaches of the South Coast
Iceland's dramatic southern coastline unfolds today, revealing waterfalls, volcanic beaches, glaciers, and towering sea cliffs.
Continue east along the South Coast, one of the country's most scenic regions. Visit Seljalandsfoss, where a pathway leads behind the waterfall, and nearby Skógafoss, whose powerful cascade can be seen from miles away. Further east, the landscape becomes increasingly dramatic as glaciers descend from the highlands towards the coast. Around Vík, explore Reynisfjara's black sand beach, basalt columns, and offshore sea stacks, while Dyrhólaey offers sweeping views across the coastline and the Atlantic Ocean. Throughout the day, the route showcases the powerful interaction between ice, fire, and sea that defines South Iceland.

Day 4 – Beneath Vatnajökull Glacier
Today brings you into the shadow of Europe's largest glacier, where ice, rivers, and volcanic landscapes shape one of Iceland's most spectacular regions.
Travel further east beneath the immense ice cap of Vatnajökull. Along the way, cross vast outwash plains and ancient lava fields before arriving in Skaftafell, part of Vatnajökull National Park. Surrounded by glacier tongues and rugged mountain peaks, the area offers excellent opportunities for walking and exploring. Continue to Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, where icebergs drift slowly towards the sea, before reaching nearby Diamond Beach, where fragments of ice wash ashore on the black volcanic sands. The combination of glacier ice, dark beaches, and ever-changing light creates some of the most memorable scenery along the Ring Road.

Day 5 – Through the Eastfjords
The pace slows today as the journey enters the Eastfjords, a region of winding coastal roads, quiet villages, and dramatic mountain scenery.
Leaving the glacier region behind, continue east along a coastline shaped by ancient volcanic activity and glacial erosion. The route follows narrow fjords and sweeping bays, passing through small fishing communities that reflect a different side of Icelandic life. Steep mountains rise directly from the sea, while winding roads reveal constantly changing views around every bend. Unlike the more famous attractions of South Iceland, the Eastfjords invite travellers to enjoy the journey itself, allowing time to stop in charming villages, scenic harbours, and lesser-known viewpoints. This is one of the country's most peaceful and atmospheric regions.

Day 6 – From the Eastfjords to North Iceland
Today's journey leaves the quiet fjords behind and enters a landscape shaped by volcanic forces, powerful rivers, and some of Iceland's most dramatic natural scenery.
Depart the Eastfjords and travel north through mountain passes and wide open valleys, gradually leaving the coastline behind. Along the way, there is the opportunity to detour to Stuðlagil Canyon, where striking basalt columns rise above the vivid waters of the glacial river below, creating one of Iceland's most remarkable geological landscapes. Continuing west, the route approaches the powerful river systems fed by Vatnajökull glacier, offering the option to visit Dettifoss, Europe's most powerful waterfall. Here, enormous volumes of glacial water plunge into a rugged canyon, showcasing the raw forces that continue to shape Iceland's landscape. By evening, arrive in the Lake Mývatn region, where lava fields, geothermal areas, and volcanic formations reveal yet another side of North Iceland.
Day 7 – Volcanic Landscapes of Lake Mývatn
Few places in Iceland showcase the forces that shaped the island more clearly than the extraordinary landscapes surrounding Lake Mývatn.
Spend the day exploring the region's remarkable diversity. Traverse lava fields and volcanic craters, visit the geothermal area at Námaskarð where steam rises from the earth, and discover the lava formations of Dimmuborgir. Depending on your route, nearby highlights may include Dettifoss, Europe's most powerful waterfall, or Goðafoss, one of Iceland's most beautiful waterfalls. The Mývatn area combines geology, birdlife, and dramatic scenery within a relatively small area, creating a fascinating and varied day of exploration.

Day 8 – Waterfalls, Whales & North Iceland

Travel west through North Iceland, where fjords, agricultural valleys, and mountain landscapes create a gentler contrast to the volcanic terrain of Mývatn. Stop at Goðafoss waterfall before continuing towards Akureyri, the unofficial capital of North Iceland. Set beside Eyjafjörður fjord, Akureyri offers a lively atmosphere, colourful streets, and beautiful views across the water. Depending on your interests, the route can also include time in Húsavík, Iceland's whale-watching capital, or additional stops along the northern coastline. Day 9 – Across the North to West Iceland
Leaving North Iceland behind, today's journey crosses broad valleys and historic landscapes on the way towards the west.
Continue along the Ring Road through northern farming districts, coastal inlets, and mountain scenery. While this section of the route is less visited than some of Iceland's headline destinations, it offers an authentic glimpse into rural Iceland and its rich history. Depending on the chosen route, opportunities may include visiting historic sites, turf farm museums, coastal viewpoints, and areas known for seal watching. As the day progresses, the landscape gradually transitions towards the valleys and lava fields of West Iceland.

Day 10 – West Iceland & Return to Reykjavík
The final stage of the Ring Road showcases another side of Iceland before the journey comes full circle in Reykjavík.
Explore the highlights of Borgarfjörður, a region known for geothermal activity, picturesque waterfalls, and strong links to the Icelandic Sagas. Visit Deildartunguhver, Europe's most powerful hot spring, before continuing to Hraunfossar and Barnafoss, where clear water emerges from beneath ancient lava fields. The region provides a fitting conclusion to a journey that has showcased Iceland's remarkable variety of landscapes. Later, return to Reykjavík where there is time to enjoy a final evening in the capital, revisit favourite neighbourhoods, or simply reflect on your journey around the country.

Day 11 – Departure
The final morning offers one last glimpse of Iceland's volcanic landscapes before your journey home.
Drive across the Reykjanes Peninsula to Keflavík Airport and return your rental vehicle before departure. Depending on your flight schedule, there may be time for a final stop or a leisurely breakfast before heading to the airport. Having completed the full Ring Road, you'll leave with an understanding of how dramatically Iceland's landscapes change from one region to the next, from glacier lagoons and volcanic deserts to remote fjords, geothermal valleys, and coastal communities.
