Tour Itinerary
Day 1 – Arrival in Reykjavík
Your winter journey begins in Iceland's capital, where colourful streets, cosy cafés, and geothermal warmth provide a welcoming introduction to the season.
After arriving at Keflavík Airport, collect your rental vehicle and make your way to Reykjavík. Winter transforms the city, with festive lights, long twilight hours, and snow-covered rooftops often creating a magical atmosphere. Depending on your arrival time, explore the waterfront, wander through the city centre, or simply relax after your flight. While the days ahead will focus on Iceland's dramatic natural landscapes, Reykjavík offers a comfortable first evening and a chance to experience contemporary Icelandic culture before heading into the countryside.
Optional Activities
- Sky Lagoon
- Blue Lagoon
- Reykjavík Food Walk
- Northern Lights Cruise
Day 2 – Winter Landscapes of the Golden Circle
Today introduces some of Iceland's most famous natural landmarks, made even more dramatic by winter conditions.
Leave Reykjavík behind and head into the countryside to explore the Golden Circle. Visit Þingvellir National Park, where frozen lava fields and snow-covered landscapes highlight the geological forces that shaped Iceland. Continue to the Geysir geothermal area, where hot water erupts from the earth amidst steam and frost, before visiting Gullfoss, which often takes on a spectacular icy appearance during the colder months. As daylight fades, continue to your countryside accommodation in South Iceland, away from city lights and ideally positioned for northern lights viewing should conditions be favourable.
Optional Activities
- Secret Lagoon
- Laugarvatn Fontana
- Snowmobiling on Langjökull
- Friðheimar Greenhouse Visit
- Laugarás Lagoon
Day 3 – Waterfalls & Black Sand Beaches in Winter
The dramatic landscapes of the South Coast take on a new character in winter, where snow, ice, and low sunlight create unforgettable scenery.
Travel east along the South Coast, stopping at Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss, two of Iceland's most iconic waterfalls. During winter, ice formations often develop around the falls, adding another layer of beauty to the landscape. Continue towards the coastal village of Vík, where dramatic cliffs, black sand beaches, and powerful Atlantic waves create striking contrasts against the surrounding snow-covered mountains. The shorter winter days encourage a slower pace, allowing time to fully appreciate each location before settling into your next countryside stay.
Optional Activities
- Glacier Walk on Sólheimajökull
- Snowmobile Tour
- Lava Show in Vík
- ATV Adventure
Day 4 – Beneath Vatnajökull Glacier
Today brings you into the heart of southeast Iceland, where Europe's largest glacier dominates the landscape.
Continue east across vast volcanic plains and glacial outwash areas towards Vatnajökull National Park. Arriving in the Skaftafell region, you'll find a landscape of glacier tongues, rugged mountains, and open wilderness. Further east lies Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, where icebergs drift silently through the lagoon before reaching Diamond Beach, where fragments of ice rest on black volcanic sands. During winter, the soft light and frozen surroundings create a particularly atmospheric setting, making this one of the most memorable regions of the journey.
Optional Activities
- Ice Cave Tour
- Glacier Walk in Skaftafell
- Zodiac Boat Tour (Seasonal Conditions Permitting)
- Guided Photography Tour
Day 5 – Glacier Lagoons & Return Along the South Coast
Today's journey follows the winter coastline westward, offering another perspective on the landscapes explored in previous days.
Spend the morning enjoying the glacier lagoon area before beginning the return journey along the South Coast. Winter light often transforms familiar landscapes, and the drive west provides opportunities to revisit favourite locations under entirely different conditions. Snow-covered mountains, frozen rivers, and changing weather constantly alter the scenery, ensuring the route feels new despite following the same coastline. This flexible day also allows time to stop at lesser-known viewpoints and hidden corners often missed during more tightly paced itineraries.
Day 6 – A Day in the Icelandic Countryside
Far from the city lights, today is designed around enjoying Iceland's winter landscapes at a gentler pace.
Spend a full day exploring South Iceland beyond its headline attractions. Quiet countryside roads, snow-covered fields, volcanic landscapes, and small communities reveal a side of Iceland that many visitors never experience. The schedule remains intentionally flexible, allowing time to adapt to weather, road conditions, and northern lights forecasts. Whether exploring lesser-known waterfalls, enjoying a geothermal lagoon, or simply relaxing in a countryside hotel surrounded by nature, the focus is on embracing the slower rhythm of winter travel. As darkness returns, another opportunity awaits to watch for the northern lights should conditions allow.
Day 7 – Return to Reykjavík
The final full day balances countryside exploration with time in Iceland's vibrant capital.
Travel back to Reykjavík, enjoying the changing winter scenery along the way. Upon arrival, spend the afternoon exploring areas you may have missed at the beginning of your trip, from museums and galleries to local restaurants and waterfront walks. Reykjavík offers a lively contrast to the quiet landscapes of the countryside and provides the perfect setting to reflect on the experiences of the week. In the evening, enjoy a final Icelandic dinner or one last stroll through the illuminated city centre.
Day 8 – Departure
Your winter adventure comes to an end as you journey across the volcanic landscapes of Reykjanes towards Keflavík Airport.
Depending on your flight schedule, there may be time for a final coffee in Reykjavík or a short stop on the Reykjanes Peninsula before returning your rental vehicle at the airport. From frozen waterfalls and glacier lagoons to geothermal bathing and northern lights opportunities, this journey showcases some of Iceland's most memorable winter experiences.
Optional Activities
- Blue Lagoon
