Tour Itinerary
Day 1 – Arrival in Reykjavík
Your journey begins in Iceland's vibrant capital, where colourful streets, coastal views, and a relaxed atmosphere set the tone for a slower way of travelling.
After arriving at Keflavík Airport, collect your rental vehicle and make your way to Reykjavík. Rather than rushing straight into sightseeing, this itinerary is designed to allow time to settle in and adjust to Iceland's pace. Depending on your arrival time, enjoy a walk along the waterfront, visit Hallgrímskirkja Church, or simply relax at a local café. Reykjavík's compact city centre is ideal for exploring on foot, allowing you to ease into the journey without a busy schedule. The day is intentionally unhurried, creating space to rest and enjoy your first impressions of Iceland.
Optional Activities
- Sky Lagoon
- Blue Lagoon
- Reykjavík Food Walk
- Whale Watching from Reykjavík
Day 2 – Discovering Reykjavík at Your Own Pace
With no long drives or fixed schedule, today is an opportunity to enjoy Reykjavík like a local rather than simply passing through.
Spend the day exploring Iceland's capital at whatever pace feels right. Wander through neighbourhoods filled with colourful houses, browse independent shops and galleries, or visit museums that explore Iceland's history and culture. The city's cafés, bakeries, and swimming pools offer equally rewarding ways to experience daily life. Unlike many itineraries that rush travellers into the countryside after arrival, this slower approach allows time to settle into Icelandic rhythms and fully enjoy Reykjavík's unique atmosphere. Whether your interests are food, culture, architecture, or simply people-watching, the day can unfold entirely around your preferences.
Day 3 – Into the Valleys of Borgarfjörður
Leaving the city behind, the journey moves into the peaceful landscapes of West Iceland, where geothermal energy, waterfalls, and Icelandic history shape the region.
Travel north into Borgarfjörður, a region known for its natural beauty and strong connections to Iceland's Saga Age. Along the way, visit Deildartunguhver, Europe's most powerful hot spring, before continuing to the waterfalls Hraunfossar and Barnafoss, where clear glacial water emerges through ancient lava fields. Compared to Iceland's more heavily visited regions, Borgarfjörður offers a quieter atmosphere and a stronger sense of connection to the landscape. After arriving at your accommodation, there is time to settle in and enjoy your surroundings without feeling the need to immediately move on to the next destination.
Optional Activities
- Krauma Geothermal Baths
- Into the Glacier
- Lava Cave Exploration
- Horseback Riding
Day 4 – Exploring Borgarfjörður
Today is about slowing down and experiencing the region in greater depth, with the freedom to follow your interests rather than a fixed sightseeing list.
With a full day based in Borgarfjörður, there is time to move beyond the region's headline attractions. Scenic valleys, quiet country roads, geothermal areas, and historic sites invite exploration at a relaxed pace. You may choose to visit locations associated with Iceland's sagas, enjoy short walks through lava landscapes, stop at local farms, or simply spend time appreciating the peaceful countryside scenery. The benefit of staying multiple nights in one place becomes especially clear today, as there is no pressure to pack up or cover large distances. Instead, the focus is on enjoying the landscape and allowing the day to unfold naturally.
Day 5 – A Day Exploring Snæfellsnes Peninsula
Today offers the opportunity to discover one of Iceland's most diverse regions, where volcanic landscapes, coastal cliffs, fishing villages, and glacier views come together in a single peninsula.
With another night based in Borgarfjörður, there is flexibility to venture west and explore Snæfellsnes Peninsula, often referred to as "Iceland in Miniature" for the extraordinary variety of landscapes found within a relatively compact area. Travel along dramatic coastlines, through lava fields, and between charming fishing villages while taking in views of the glacier-capped Snæfellsjökull volcano. Along the way, discover black sand beaches, rugged sea cliffs, historic harbours, and iconic landmarks such as Kirkjufell mountain. Unlike travellers trying to fit Snæfellsnes into a packed itinerary, you have the freedom to explore at a relaxed pace, stopping where interest and scenery invite you. Return to Borgarfjörður in the evening for a final night in West Iceland.
Optional Activities
- Whale Watching from Ólafsvík
- Vatnshellir Lava Cave
- Sea Kayaking
Day 6 – From West Iceland to the South Coast
Today's journey connects two of Iceland's most beautiful regions, combining scenic driving with opportunities to explore at your own pace.
Travel south through changing landscapes of lava fields, river valleys, and distant mountain ranges. Rather than following the fastest route, the day encourages a more relaxed approach with time for meaningful stops along the way. Depending on personal interests, the journey may include Þingvellir National Park, selected Golden Circle attractions, or quieter countryside locations away from the main visitor routes. By afternoon, arrive in South Iceland, where glacier-capped mountains rise above broad agricultural plains. Settle into your countryside accommodation and enjoy another multi-night stay, avoiding the constant hotel changes that often characterise traditional touring itineraries.
Optional Activities
- Secret Lagoon
- Laugarvatn Fontana
- Friðheimar Greenhouse Experience
- Horseback Riding
Day 7 – Waterfalls, Beaches & Coastal Landscapes
South Iceland's iconic scenery is best experienced when there is time to pause, explore, and appreciate each location without feeling rushed.
Spend the day discovering some of Iceland's most celebrated natural landmarks, including Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss waterfalls, black sand beaches, and dramatic coastal viewpoints around Vík. While these locations are among the country's most famous sights, the advantage of this itinerary lies in the flexibility to enjoy them at your own pace. There is time to linger at viewpoints, take short walks, or simply enjoy the ever-changing light across the landscape. The focus remains on quality rather than quantity, allowing a deeper appreciation of the scenery rather than rushing between stops.
Optional Activities
- Glacier Walk on Sólheimajökull
- Snowmobile Tour
- Lava Show in Vík
- ATV Adventure
Day 8 – South Iceland at Leisure
Today is intentionally open, giving you the freedom to choose between activity, relaxation, or simply spending more time in nature.
A second full day based in South Iceland creates space for spontaneous discoveries and personal interests. Some travellers may wish to explore additional areas along the South Coast, while others may prefer a slower day focused on wellness, photography, or simply enjoying the surroundings. The flexibility built into the itinerary means weather conditions, personal preferences, and local recommendations can all influence how the day unfolds. This balance between structure and freedom is one of the defining features of slow travel and often leads to the most memorable experiences.
Day 9 – Reykjanes & Return to Reykjavík
The final stage of the journey returns to the landscapes where Iceland's volcanic origins are most visible.
Travel back towards Reykjavík via the Reykjanes Peninsula, a region shaped by recent volcanic activity, geothermal areas, and rugged Atlantic coastlines. The wide-open lava fields and dramatic coastline provide a fitting final chapter to a journey built around nature, space, and exploration at a slower pace. Depending on your interests, there is time to explore the peninsula, enjoy a geothermal bathing experience, or spend a final evening in Reykjavík. The day remains flexible, allowing you to finish the journey in whatever way feels most rewarding.
Optional Activities
- Blue Lagoon
Day 10 – Departure
After ten days of travelling at a gentler pace, your Iceland journey comes to an end.
Drive to Keflavík Airport and return your rental vehicle before departure. With longer stays, fewer hotel changes, and time to experience each region more deeply, this itinerary offers a different way to discover Iceland, one that prioritises connection, balance, and the freedom to enjoy the journey rather than simply ticking off attractions.
This itinerary is intentionally designed with fewer overnight locations and can be customized in either direction. Additional nights can be added to create an even slower pace, while optional activities can be included for travelers looking for a more active experience.
